Mary’s Experience

Mary brings decades of home birth midwifery experience to her teaching. She began midwifery in 1975. Her depth of understanding about all things related to birth, bonding and attachment are unparalleled.

Mary is a registered nurse, a registered craniosacral therapist, and a former adjunct faculty member at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. She is internationally known for her work which encompasses prenatal care, postpartum care, and water birth as well as prenatal and birth trauma resolution, using Somatic Experiencing and Craniosacral therapy. Her focus is on assisting babies and parents to integrate the prenatal and birth experience in order to strengthen their relationships.

Collaborations

Together, Mary and Ray created About Connections, a practice that applies Somatic Blueprint methods to her midwifery practice by preparing families for  the birthing process, supporting families through the birth, and then following up with families during the postpartum period. As a result, Mary has a very low hospital transfer rate for her home birth midwifery practice. One particular run saw 63 consecutive births with no hospital transfers.

Mary is masterful at applying Somatic Blueprint practices to supporting families with babies who had traumatic beginnings and helping them heal from those experiences. She is a major collaborator with Ray especially in developing “supported attachment,” infant and baby story showing and telling of their histories, and establishing secure breastfeeding between moms and babies.

Additional Achievements

Mary co-founded the Santa Barbara Birth Resource Center in l982, is a board member of the National Midwifery Institute, and sits on the Board of Directors as president of BEBA — Building and Enhancing Bonding and Attachment.
